¿Merece la pena restaurar un sillón? 4 señales para saberloIs that armchair worth restoring? 4 signs to find out

Estructura, uniones, tapizado y valor sentimental — lo que miramos en nuestro taller de Massanassa, Valencia, antes de recomendar una restauraciónFrame, joints, upholstery and sentimental value — what we check in our Massanassa workshop, Valencia, before recommending a restoration

It is one of the questions we get asked most in the workshop. Someone sends us a photo of an armchair with torn fabric, sunken padding and a wobbly arm, and asks whether to throw it out or whether it can be saved.

The answer rarely depends on how worn it looks outside, but on what it has inside. These are the four signs we check before saying yes.

If the frame is good, everything else can be fixed. Many old armchairs were made with solid wood and well-crafted joints, something that is hard to find in new furniture today.

This is what a well-built armchair looks like inside: solid wood and corner blocks.

To check, turn it over and look under the seat. Wood with grain and corner blocks: good sign. Chipboard and everything stapled: bad sign.

Las cuatro señalesThe four signs

01La estructuraThe frame

¿Es de madera maciza? Es lo que lo decide todo.Is it solid wood? That is what decides everything.

02Las unionesThe joints

¿Baila o cruje? Tiene arreglo: se reencola.Wobbly or creaky? It can be fixed: we re-glue it.

03El tapizadoThe upholstery

Is it the fabric and padding? That is all replaced.

04Lo que no se compraWhat money can’t buy

¿Tiene historia para ti? Eso no se fabrica.Does it mean something to you? That can’t be made.

A wobbly armchair is not broken. It is almost always the glue in the joints, which dries out over the years. We take the joint apart, remove the old glue, re-glue it and clamp it until it sets.

Clamped gluing: the joint is solid again.

Try it: push the arm from side to side. If it moves, it needs re-gluing, but the piece can be saved.

Torn fabric, sunken padding or tired webbing are no reason to throw out an armchair. That is exactly what gets replaced when re-upholstering. We strip it back to the frame and rebuild it: new webbing, new padding and the fabric of your choice.

It was my grandmother’s armchair.” When someone tells us that, we know the decision isn’t only about wood and fabric.

Restaurarlos es conservar el mueble y también lo que significa para ti.Some pieces carry a story, and designs that are no longer made this way: hand carving, fine woods, proportions from another era. Restoring them keeps the piece and what it means to you.

Y si no compensa, también te lo decimosAnd if it’s not worth it, we’ll tell you

If the frame is badly damaged or restoring it would cost more than the piece is worth, we would rather you know before we start. Ticks all four signs? It deserves a second life.
